Joint Pain Treatment
Diagnosis and relief for chronic and acute joint pain.
Joint pain can arise from many different causes, including arthritis, injury, overuse, or inflammation of the soft tissue around a joint rather than the joint itself. Because the right treatment depends entirely on the underlying cause, an accurate diagnosis is the essential first step before deciding on the best approach to relieve pain.
Types
Mechanical Joint Pain
Pain related to structural wear, alignment, or overuse rather than inflammation.
Inflammatory Joint Pain
Pain driven by an underlying inflammatory or autoimmune condition.
Referred Joint Pain
Pain felt in a joint but actually originating from a nearby structure, such as the spine.
Post-Injury Joint Pain
Pain persisting or developing after a previous joint injury.
Soft Tissue-Related Joint Pain
Pain from tendons, ligaments, or bursae around a joint rather than the joint surface itself.
Common Causes
Joint pain can originate from the joint surface itself, the surrounding soft tissue, or occasionally be referred from another part of the body entirely.
- Osteoarthritis or other forms of arthritis affecting the joint surface.
- Soft tissue inflammation - tendinitis or bursitis around a joint, without the joint itself being damaged.
- Previous injury causing ongoing mechanical symptoms.
- Overuse from repetitive activity placing strain on a joint.
- Referred pain, such as hip pain actually originating from the lower back.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain localised to a specific joint, or sometimes felt more diffusely around it
- Pain that varies with activity, rest, or time of day depending on the underlying cause
- Swelling, which may or may not be present depending on the cause
- Stiffness affecting the joint's normal range of motion
- Pain that may radiate beyond the joint itself in cases of referred pain
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves a careful examination to determine whether pain is coming from the joint itself, the surrounding soft tissue, or is referred from elsewhere, supported by imaging where the cause is not clear from examination alone.
Treatment Approach
Treatment is directed at the specific underlying cause once identified, rather than a single generic approach for all joint pain - this might mean arthritis management, soft tissue treatment, physiotherapy, or addressing a source of referred pain. Dr. K. G. Gopalakrishna focuses on accurately identifying the true source of joint pain before recommending targeted treatment.
