Trigger Point Injections
Targeted injections to relieve muscle pain and spasms.
Trigger points are tight, tender knots that form within a muscle, often causing localised pain as well as pain referred to other areas of the body. Trigger point injections deliver medication directly into these tight muscle bands to relieve pain and break the cycle of muscle spasm, commonly used for chronic muscular pain in the neck, shoulders, and back.
Types
Local Anaesthetic Injection
A numbing medication injected directly into the trigger point to relieve pain.
Combined Anaesthetic and Steroid Injection
Adds an anti-inflammatory component for more persistent trigger points.
Dry Needling
A needle is inserted into the trigger point without injecting any medication, used as an alternative or complementary technique.
Common Causes
Trigger points typically develop from muscle overuse, poor posture, or as a secondary response to an underlying joint or spinal problem.
- Muscle overuse or repetitive strain from activity or occupation.
- Poor posture, particularly with prolonged sitting or screen use.
- Stress and tension contributing to chronic muscle tightness.
- An underlying joint or spinal problem causing the surrounding muscles to compensate and tighten.
- Previous injury leading to ongoing protective muscle guarding.
Signs and Symptoms
- A tight, tender knot palpable within a muscle
- Localised pain at the trigger point itself
- Pain referred to another area, such as a headache originating from neck muscle tightness
- Restricted movement in the affected area
- Pain that reproduces or worsens when the trigger point is pressed
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is clinical, based on locating a tender, taut band within the muscle that reproduces the patient's typical pain pattern when pressed.
Treatment Approach
The injection is given directly into the identified trigger point, often providing prompt relief of both local and referred pain. This is frequently combined with physiotherapy and stretching to address the underlying muscle tightness and reduce recurrence. Dr. K. G. Gopalakrishna uses trigger point injections as part of a broader approach when muscular pain is a significant contributor to a patient's symptoms.
