An electrocardiogram (ECG) records the heart's electrical activity, commonly used as part of general health screening or before certain procedures to check that the heart is functioning normally.
Types
Resting ECG
A standard ECG recorded while lying still, the most common form of the test.
Pre-Operative ECG
An ECG performed as part of routine assessment before surgery under anaesthesia.
Screening ECG
An ECG performed as part of a general health checkup, particularly for those with risk factors.
Common Causes
An ECG is generally requested either as part of routine screening or as a standard pre-operative check.
- Pre-surgical assessment before a procedure requiring anaesthesia.
- General health screening, particularly for those with cardiac risk factors.
- Symptoms such as chest discomfort, palpitations, or unexplained breathlessness.
- Routine checkup as part of preventive health assessment.
Signs and Symptoms
- Chest discomfort, palpitations, or irregular heartbeat sensations
- Unexplained breathlessness or fatigue
- A scheduled surgical procedure requiring pre-operative clearance
- Risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease
Diagnosis
The test itself is quick, painless, and non-invasive, involving small sensors placed on the chest and limbs to record the heart's electrical activity for a short period.
Treatment Approach
Results are reviewed as part of the overall assessment - a normal ECG generally confirms suitability for a planned procedure, while any abnormality identified is discussed and referred appropriately for further cardiac evaluation.
