Kidney Function Test
Blood test to assess kidney health.
Kidney function tests measure how well the kidneys are filtering waste from the blood, and are relevant both for general health screening and for certain orthopaedic contexts, such as before starting particular medications.
Types
Serum Creatinine and Urea
The standard blood tests used to estimate kidney function.
eGFR Calculation
An estimated filtration rate calculated from blood results, giving a clearer picture of overall kidney function.
Common Causes
Kidney function testing is requested for general screening purposes, or specifically when a condition or medication could affect kidney health.
- Routine health screening, particularly in older adults.
- Diabetes or high blood pressure, both of which can affect kidney function over time.
- Before starting certain medications that are processed by the kidneys.
- Investigating symptoms such as swelling or unexplained fatigue.
Signs and Symptoms
- Often none in early kidney function decline, which is why testing matters
- Swelling, particularly in the legs or ankles
- Unexplained fatigue
- Changes in urination
Diagnosis
A blood sample is used to measure key markers of kidney function, interpreted alongside the individual's overall health profile.
Treatment Approach
Results guide whether kidney function is normal, needs monitoring, or requires referral for further evaluation and management.
