OPD Consultation
Outpatient orthopedic consultation for all bone and joint concerns.
An outpatient (OPD) consultation is the starting point for almost every orthopaedic concern, whether it is a new injury, ongoing joint pain, or a second opinion on a previous diagnosis. The consultation combines a detailed history and physical examination to understand the problem clearly before deciding whether further tests, treatment, or referral is needed.
Types
New Patient Consultation
A first visit for a new concern, involving a full history and examination.
Follow-up Consultation
A review visit to check progress, adjust treatment, or discuss test results.
Second Opinion Consultation
An independent review of a diagnosis or treatment plan already given elsewhere.
Post-Injury Consultation
An assessment following a recent injury to determine the appropriate next steps.
Common Causes
A consultation is appropriate any time there is a bone, joint, or muscle concern that needs a proper clinical assessment rather than guesswork.
- A new injury or sudden onset of pain needing assessment.
- Persistent or worsening joint, back, or muscle pain.
- A recommendation for surgery or treatment from elsewhere, wanting an independent second opinion.
- Ongoing management of a known orthopaedic condition.
- General concerns about bone health, mobility, or an unclear diagnosis.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain, swelling, or stiffness in a joint or limb
- Reduced ability to move or use a body part normally
- Pain that has not improved with rest or simple measures
- Concern following an injury, however minor it may seem
- A need for clarity on a previous diagnosis or treatment recommendation
Diagnosis
The consultation itself involves discussing the history of the problem in detail, followed by a physical examination of the affected area. Based on this, further investigations such as X-ray or blood tests may be arranged on the same visit where needed, since on-site diagnostics are available at the clinic.
Treatment Approach
Following the consultation, a clear plan is discussed - this may involve starting treatment immediately, arranging further tests, or a period of monitoring with a follow-up review. Dr. K. G. Gopalakrishna explains the likely diagnosis and reasoning behind the recommended next steps in plain terms during the consultation itself.
