Sports Injury Consultation
Assessment and treatment planning for sports-related injuries.
A sports injury consultation provides a focused assessment of an injury sustained during sport or exercise, aiming to accurately diagnose the problem and build a treatment plan that gets the patient back to their sport as safely and quickly as possible. Because athletes and active individuals often have specific performance goals, treatment planning also considers the demands of the particular sport involved.
Types
Acute Injury Assessment
Evaluation of a recent injury sustained during sport or training.
Chronic or Recurrent Injury Assessment
Evaluation of an ongoing or repeatedly recurring issue affecting sports performance.
Return-to-Sport Assessment
Evaluation to determine readiness to safely resume sport after an injury or surgery.
Pre-Participation Screening
Assessment to identify injury risk factors before starting a new sport or training programme.
Common Causes
Sports injuries arise from a wide range of causes, from a single traumatic incident to gradual overuse from repetitive training.
- Acute trauma - falls, collisions, or awkward movements during play.
- Overuse - repetitive strain from training volume exceeding the body's capacity to recover.
- Inadequate warm-up or conditioning before activity.
- Poor technique placing abnormal stress on joints or soft tissue.
- Returning to sport too soon after a previous injury.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain occurring during or after sporting activity
- Swelling or bruising following a specific incident
- Reduced performance or difficulty with movements previously done without difficulty
- Recurring pain in the same area during repeated training sessions
- A feeling of weakness or instability in a joint during activity
Diagnosis
Assessment includes a detailed history of the injury and the sport involved, a physical examination of movement and strength, and imaging such as X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI where needed to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment Approach
Treatment planning considers not just resolving the injury, but the specific demands of returning to the patient's sport safely. This may involve physiotherapy, activity modification, bracing, or in some cases surgery, followed by a structured return-to-sport programme. Dr. K. G. Gopalakrishna tailors assessment and treatment planning to both the diagnosis and the athlete's specific sporting goals.
